Overview of the Project
We will observe, record, and measure seasonal changes for one week each in three of the four seasons (fall, winter, and spring).
Collection Times
Fall: October Winter: January Spring: April |
Submission Times
Fall: Early November Winter: Late February Spring: Mid May |
The project includes 4 activities: tree observation, temperature, appropriate clothing, and sunrise/sunset.
There are templates on the project site, but they are only suggestions. We are not required to use them to complete the project. I am able to create my own if I would like. There is also a weather observation form online which is provided to submit our daily data at the end of each week. If we prefer, the option is given to fill out the specific forms and email them to the project coordinator. I found that the templates and forms provided on the site are very useful and I would just use them with my own class. The weather observation form is also very easy to fill out and is available right on the project site. I would fill in this form at the end of each of the weeks with my class to keep them involved.

Activity 1: Tree Observation
We will choose a deciduous tree in our school community and observe it.
The project site gives some suggestions of things to observe about the tree:
This activity takes place one week in the fall, winter, and spring.
The project site gives some suggestions of things to observe about the tree:
- Shape, amount, and/or color of the leaves
- Shape and size of the trunk
- Shape of the tree itself
- The branches
- Any signs of animal life
This activity takes place one week in the fall, winter, and spring.
Activity 2: Temperature
We will record the temperature for one week in each season at the same time every day. We will chart the daily temperatures on the "Data Gathering Form" template provided on the project site.
Activity 3: What Clothes Do I Wear?
Students will draw a picture of themselves wearing appropriate clothing for each season. For differentiation, students can draw by hand or use a paint program. As the teacher, I will choose 2-5 student work samples and scan or send them in to the project coordinator.
Activity 4: Sunrise/Sunset
We will record the sunrise and sunset times for each day of the observation week. We will record our information on the same "Data Gathering Form" used during the temperature activity. The project site recommends using www.sunrisesunset.com for specific times for our area.
